When Self-Doubt Sounds Like the Truth: Recognizing Imposter Syndrome

If you’ve ever stepped into a new role, launched a business, led a team, or taken a brave next step and quietly wondered, “Who am I to do this?” you’re not alone. Imposter syndrome affects people at every stage of their career and life. But for many high-achieving women- women who are driven, compassionate, and committed to growth- these feelings can land even harder.
At The Collective Clarity Coaching & Consulting, we often see brilliant, capable women who attribute their success to luck, timing, or "just getting by," rather than recognizing it as evidence of their resilience, talent, and experience. It’s not because they aren’t qualified. It’s because self-doubt can be loud, and our culture teaches us to listen to the loud. It rarely teaches us how to rewrite that narrative.
Why Imposter Syndrome Shows Up in Smart, Capable Women
Imposter syndrome doesn't show up in people who aren’t doing big things. It shows up when you’re stretching. When you’re growing. When you’re operating outside the familiar. It whispers things like:
“Someone else could do this better.”
“I should already know the answer.”
“What if they find out I’m not as strong/smart/prepared as they think?”
But here’s the truth: imposter syndrome is not a sign of inadequacy. It’s evidence that you’re expanding into a new chapter of yourself.
In our Shed Talk: Raising the Bar episode on imposter syndrome, we discussed the uncomfortable tension that comes with growth and the shadow of self-doubt that often accompanies it. We also shared strategies for moving through it, including grounding yourself in your values, reconnecting with your strengths, and building a support system that reflects your courage back to you.
You can listen to that episode right here on this website- go to the More tab and click on Podcast. Additionally, you can find it HERE on Spotify. It serves as an especially helpful reminder that you’re not the only one navigating these feelings.
The Cost of Letting Imposter Syndrome Lead
When imposter syndrome takes the wheel, it impacts more than confidence—it impacts behavior.
Women (including myself) who experience it often:
Play small to avoid being “found out”- this is me
Overwork to compensate
Stay silent in rooms where their voice is needed- also me
Delay launching or finishing what matters most
Downplay accomplishments instead of owning them- yep, me too
This doesn’t just affect your growth; it affects how you show up for yourself, your family, and your work.
But with awareness—and strategic support—you can shift the story. Trust me, I did. You're here now, and this is my success story.
Moving Through Imposter Syndrome with Clarity
Like any internal pattern, imposter syndrome doesn’t disappear overnight. But you can learn to work with it rather than against it.
Here are a few clarity-building approaches you can begin today:
Name it. When you hear the voice of “not enough,” pause and say,“This is self-doubt speaking, not truth.” Creating separation reduces its power.
Return to the facts.Your résumé of resilience is real. Your experiences are real. Your growth is real. Write down three accomplishments you tend to minimize. Revisit them often.
Ask for support. A trusted colleague, coach, or circle of women can help hold the mirror steady. You do not need to navigate self-doubt alone.
Practice confident action. Confidence doesn’t come first. Action comes first. Confidence follows.
This is why community matters—and why conversations like the one on Shed Talk are so grounding. When we hear other women telling the truth about their experiences, it becomes easier to tell the truth about our own.
