Look Again

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how quickly something can start to feel like one more thing.
One more thing to manage.
One more thing to figure out.
One more thing that wasn’t part of the plan.
You know that feeling.
Your day is already full and something gets added. Someone needs you. A plan changes. Something takes longer than it should. The calendar that looked manageable on Sunday suddenly feels very different by Wednesday.
And sometimes, it really is one more thing.
I don’t think we need to pretend otherwise.
Life gets full. Things are inconvenient. People need us at the exact moment we feel like we have nothing left to give. Good things can be exhausting. Things we chose can still feel heavy.
But lately, I’ve been trying to catch myself before I settle too deeply into the frustration and ask a different question:
What about this might actually be a blessing?
Not How can I make this sound positive?
Not Why shouldn’t I feel overwhelmed?
Just—what else might be true here?
Because sometimes the calendar that feels too full is filled with work I once hoped would come.
Sometimes rearranging my day because someone I love needs me is inconvenient. It also reminds me that I have people in my life I want to show up for-- and people who trust me enough to ask-- and people who love me that much right back.
Sometimes the house is noisy because it’s full. Or there are projects to finish. Or preparations to plan for. Or things that just need to be done.
The schedule is complicated because there are people and places and opportunities that matter to us. When we love those people, enjoy those places, and embrace those opportunities, there are bound to be conflicts—in times and days and in how much of us is actually available.
And the choices are HARD.
We’re tired because we’re doing something we said we wanted to do.

But I’m learning, as I live this beautiful, messy, complicated life, that sometimes we’re simply in a season that asks more of us than we expected.
I’ve had enough of those moments lately to realize how easy it is to focus on the inconvenience and miss what’s sitting right beside it.
Gratitude.
Not the forced kind. Not the you should be grateful kind. But the quieter kind that comes when you look at the same circumstance from a slightly different angle and realize something.
Oh.
This is a lot.
And this is also something I’m incredibly grateful to have.
Both things can be true.
Maybe that’s the perspective shift I’ve needed- Not to make the hard thing less hard. Sometimes hard is just hard. And I'm definitely not trying to turn every challenge into a lesson or convince myself that everything is a blessing in disguise. I don’t think that’s the point.
The point is simply to look again. To consider what else might be true here.
To remember that the first way I see something doesn’t have to be the only way I see it.
That’s the real work. The work that makes it all manageable and perhaps brings back the joy.
Sometimes we can’t change the circumstance, but we can step a little to the left. Look at it from another angle. Notice what we couldn’t see when we were focused only on how much it was asking of us.
A little perspective likely won’t change what we’re carrying. But sometimes, it can change how we carry it.
And that, my friends, is a blessing in and of itself.
Note to self: Before calling it one more thing, look again. There might be something really good tucked inside it.
With so much gratitude and grace,
Tammy
